The Best Winter Hats & How I Am Styling Them This Season

Emily Nelissen

I am absolutely LIVING for berets.

Winter rages on in Washington, and cold-weather accessories have become an essential in my wardrobe. Hats in particular have been my savior, and on top of providing warmth, they finish off my outfit, making me feel like a style icon who has the confidence to weather whatever life throws at her.

Here are my favorite hats and how I wear them to elevate my outfits:

Beanies

Beanies are the tried and true way to keep any sort of heat from escaping out of your head. They can protect your ears from a cold winter breeze and look super cute, especially when they have those little pom-poms on the top!

This chunky white beanie is cozy and can be worn with almost anything. This is one of my go-to rain outfits, complete with my waterproof UCLA jacket and Chelsea-style rain boots. The knit cream sweater and the white embroidered daisies on my jeans compliment the beanie and brighten the look up.

Any sort of blue and grey color combination is so beautiful to me. The hazy grey beanie, powder blue sweater, and dark denim offer a muted, yet dreamy look that reflects the cloudy sky outside.

Baker Boy Caps

I think baker boy caps can take any plain outfit and give it a more stylish twist. I have been wearing them for years, and they make me feel so posh and warm on a chilly day.

In recent years, I have really grown to love the silhouette of a slight flared jean with a more relaxed top. A black baker boy hat as the final accessory is everything—chef’s kiss.

Ear Warmers

Okay, ear warmers are not technically hats, but they function in similar ways. Plus, they are the perfect solution if hats are not your thing! They allow you to wear your hair up without sacrificing protection from the cold, and they are basically an ultra-cozy, cute headband.

I went for a comfy, casual look that features one of my favorite Disneyland sweaters worn on top of a white turtleneck. I love that layered trend right now! My simple straight-leg jeans and white sneakers go great with this low-key, black ear warmer.

Berets

I have never owned a beret before this winter, but now they are my favorite accessory. They look incredibly chic while remaining functional. My head stays warm, and my outfits are taken to another level.

The base outfit of a black turtleneck, blue cropped flare jeans, and a checked jacket is quite classic in itself, but the pop of a red beret amps it all up. I look like a powerful, polished woman whose life is perfectly together.

I think black berets are the most elegant and versatile of them all. They work well amongst a plethora of outfits and textures, which is quite evident in this look. Everything, from the red satin skirt to the leather jacket, marries gorgeously with the wool beret. I feel like I am emulating a really cool spy who is equal parts mysterious and stylish.

If you can’t tell from the beanies, I’m really into the pom-pom thing. It looks like a cute little snowball on this icy blue beret! The crisp white top and light ecru pants also align with the snowy feel, while the black leather jacket and boots add contrast.

The temperature continues to drop, but that does not mean my style has to. From beanies to berets, winter hats are the perfect accessories for the rest of the season, and I will be wearing them for years to come, too!
