My February 2021 Playlist

Emily Nelissen

"I'll dream of you tonight."

February was a roller coaster of a month. Amongst many things, I spent another Valentine's Day with Martín (cute), we finished Brooklyn 99 (sad), and I got an internship (yay)! Along the way I listened to some amazing music that I am excited to add to my library. Here is my playlist:

The first time I heard this song, the sustained chilling strings and staccato beats immediately piqued my interest. As soon as I heard Brent Faiyaz's effortlessly beautiful voice, I was all in. I have listened to this song at least five times a day, every day for the last month.

In a way, "Jolie" sort of makes me think of an upbeat, summery version of "Circles" by Post Malone, but that might just be what drew me in in the first place. It's a mellow song that makes your soul feel warm. Who can be mad at that?

I discovered UMI in late January and really got to delve into her discography in February, and wow, I love her. With "Butterfly," I feel like I am gently floating in a reverie of relaxing, reverberating guitar lines and smooth, angelic vocals.

"Love Affair" maintains UMI's dreamlike spirit, but it has a more playful R&B feel. The background synth is more atmospheric, while the beat is satisfyingly punchy and groovy.

It is not hot nor is it summer, but I am still blasting "Hot Girl Summer." This is my go to song for whenever I need to be hyped up or need to feel good about myself, and it was quite helpful this month. Also as a side note--I love Meg. Go Meg.

As someone who was in band for nearly 10 years of her life, hearing an uptempo brass-heavy song can been comforting in a way. "The Real" is cheerful and groovy, and a marching band needs to cover it ASAP. (When it's safe, of course.)

I absolutely watched Framing Britney Spears on Hulu, and the first thing I have to say is #FreeBritney!!! The documentary reminded me of how much I love her music and how she was a fundamental part of my childhood. I used to watch a DVD of her Las Vegas tour for the Britney album regularly, and "Anticipating" was by far my favorite performance. The colorful, 70s-inspired costumes matched the vibrancy of the song, making it a fun Britney staple for me.

This is another one of my Britney favorites, but I think the poignancy of its message is all the more melancholic after watching the documentary. She describes the perfect "Hollywood girl" who appears to have it all, but she is actually quite lonely. As the paparazzi and tabloids have viciously tormented her throughout her career, I can only imagine this was a reflection of her true feelings. "Lucky" is a great song, but again, #FreeBritney!!!

Shoutout to my friend Derek for this one. "First Date" is sweet and earnestly vulnerable. The bright guitar/piano/harp instrumentals add to its cute vibes, and it makes me smile a whole lot.

Whenever I listen to this song, I imagine myself hovering on a fluffy, glittery cloud that is just peacefully stirring about one of those dreamy, cotton candy skies. It is really quite soothing.

Check out my playlist on Spotify here! Happy March! Spring is coming soon.
